Christmas 2009

It's March, but I am almost all caught up on the blogging break I was forced into. Here are some pictures of Phoebe's first Christmas.

Christmas Eve

Waiting for Santa

The girls in their new princess PJ's at Nanna's Christmas Eve birthday party.

Dax's number request this year was for a Spiderman Web Shooter. Thanks, Santa!

Piper's biggest wish this year was for a Kit doll from the American Girl Company. I just love her expression when she opened this highly anticipated gift.

Phoebe slept through most of her first Christmas, but I did manage to get a few pictures of her with her stocking loot. What a sweet baby!

Phoebe's Blessing

On December 13, 2009, Matt blessed our baby girl. She was given the name Phoebe Ann Marie Mitchell and then her Daddy gave her the sweetest and most tender blessing to carry with her in this life. He blessed her to always know the love of her family and Father in Heaven and that as she goes through this life that she will be a peacemaker. It was so sweet and I was so happy to share that day with our family and friends. Phoebe's name has special meaning to us. The name Ann is in honor of her great grandmothers; my Nana, Mary Ann and Matt's Grandma, Ann. Her second middle name was a late addition that we decided on just a few weeks before she was born. Marie is my Aunt Carole's middle name and it was so important to me to honor her. She is more than just an aunt to me. She is a surrogate mom and most importantly, my friend.

Here are a few pictures of the blessing. Phoebe was not feeling the picture taking deal...ha! I am going to put her back in her beautiful blessing gown (same one that Piper wore) and have Matt take some pictures of her soon.

A Baby Changes Everything

Our first few weeks with our precious girl.

The sweetest spirit settles into a home when a new baby is there. I loved watching Piper and Dax fall in love with this tiny baby girl. I loved seeing Matt tenderly hold his sweet baby girl. I was so pampered and loved as I recovered. A special time, one last time.

Phoebe's Birth Story

Note: I wrote this when Phoebe was 10 days old. As time has passed and I have recovered physically from my c section, I am finding that in many ways I am still working through the emotional recovery of her birth. Hers was a birth that I planned for and worked hard for and to have it all change so quickly was difficult to say the least. I am so glad that she is here and she is healthy and I know that the only option that day was to have a c section, but there is still a feeling of disconnect at times when I think of her birth. I am grateful for a loving support system of family and friends who got me through the first few painful and difficult weeks.

Hard to believe she has been here in our arms for 10 days already. The story of her arrival is as far away from what we expected as possible, but we are just glad that she is safe and healthy.

I had been in labor for about 2 weeks leading up to Phoebe's birthday and was very tired on every level. I had a check up on Thursday, the 29th and when my midwife checked me we found that my cervix was still 5 cm and hadn't really changed from the weekend before when we were there thinking that this was it. I was very discouraged and frustrated and starting to wonder if my body was going to be able to do this without the help of pitocin. My midwife told me that she was head down but her head was a little to the left and she wanted me to go home and work on getting her into a better position. We also decided to strip my membranes to help things move along. The plan was for me to work on moving Phoebe into a good position and we would come back in the morning. If her head was in a good position we were going to break my water and get her out.

We left the birth center and stopped at Babies R Us where Matt proceeded to pick out several little pink things for his baby girl. It was pretty cute to see him so excited and loaded down with tiny little clothes picked out especially for his baby girl. I spent the afternoon on the birth ball and doing different stretches to help Phoebe move down. I had contractions off and on throughout the day but there was nothing new about that. I went out for a wonderful dinner with my mother-in-law, sister-in-law and brother-in-law at the Cheesecake Factory. I indulged in a slice of banana cheesecake and hoped it would have the same effect on me as it had on my best friend...it was the last thing she ate before her water broke!

That night I decided to take a tylenol PM to block out any inefficient contractions per my midwife's advice. I fell asleep around midnight and woke up a few times to use the bathroom and had a few contractions but was able to fall back to sleep easily. Around 6:30 I woke up in a lot of pain and Matt woke up with me and helped me get into the shower to help ease the pain. The pain was less contractions and more baby movement and pressure. We were excited and hoped that this was a good sign that Phoebe was more head down and that we just might meet our baby girl that day! Matt got up with the kids and got them ready for school. Piper's school is within walking distance and Matt has enjoyed walking her to school in the morning and decided to walk her that morning as well. I was a little hesitant but figured he would be back before too long. Dax stayed home with me and laid down in the bed next to me to watch cartoons until Matt got home and took him to preschool. While Matt was gone I had a pick up in contractions and they were very strong. Dax at one point told me I should probably call Daddy. HA! When Matt got home it was 20 minutes until we could drop Dax off at school and I knew we needed to go straight to the birth center after dropping him off. We got all the last minute things packed into the van and dropped Dax off at school.

The birth center is 45 minutes from our house and a majority of that drive is on the interstate. As soon as we got on the interstate we were backed up in major traffic. My contractions were about 6-8 minutes apart and very strong. Matt was worried and wondering if he should just drive up the emergency lane. I convinced him to just wait for the traffic to clear and before too long were past the bubble. By the time we got to the birth center I was contracting closer and feeling pretty optimistic that we were going to be celebrating a new baby before too long. My midwife had me lay down and she checked baby's position before doing an internal exam. As soon as she started the internal her eyes got really big and she said, "Oh wow! Your water is right there and bulging. I can hardly feel your cervix." I was so happy to hear this and figured we could now break my water and we would have a baby in no time. However, when Andrea (midwife) finished the exam she told me that Phoebe was transverse (sideways) with her head on my left side. I started to cry and panic a bit knowing that there was no way to deliver her other than by c section. Andrea tried to reassure me and told me that we could do a few things to help change her position, but she was also honest with me and told me that time was not on our side. I started taking pulsatilla (a homeopathic to help move the baby) and sat on the birth ball and rocked around. I also hung off the couch with my feet above my head. Matt asked if we could get my contractions to stop if that would buy us more time. We got a half answer but there was not a lot of hope in that idea. We would soon find out why.

About 20 minutes after we got there the other midwife in the practice showed up and tried to help with the positioning of Phoebe. She also checked me and had the same reaction when she felt my water and also told us that I was completely dilated! Andrea knew that but had decided not to tell so that I wouldn't freak out even more. Hearing that I was fully dilated was bittersweet since I was so close and yet so far from the delivery we had hoped for. At this point the two midwives started working together to turn Phoebe with each contraction. It worked--she went from transverse with her head on the left to breech and then finally ended with her head on the right side. It soon became apparent that Phoebe was not going to turn head down and that I had no choice but to be transferred to the hospital and have a c section. I was terrified both at the thought of a c section and also at the urgency of the situation.

Within a few minutes the ambulance and fire truck showed up and I was loaded onto the stretcher and put in the back of the ambulance. I tried to convince the EMT's that I could walk to the ambulance but the concern was too great that my water would break. Fortunately Matt was able to ride up front in the ambulance and we were lucky to have a good friend with us that showed up planning on helping us through our natural water birth at the birth center. She followed us in her car and about 10 minutes later we were pulling into the hospital. I was wheeled into the pre-op room and about 15 people were suddenly in there asking tons of questions and telling me to do this and that. I was terrified and the fear seemed to increase with each passing moment. I had hope that we would show up at the hospital and an ultrasound would show that Phoebe was finally head down and I would be able to have a vaginal delivery---that was not in the cards that day. Instead a doctor I had never met before started telling me all of the risks associated with a c section and papers were put in front of me to sign all the while we are being told that we have no time and that they need to get the baby out ASAP. When the anesthesiologist came in to explain the spinal the OB told him that he had one chance to get the spinal in and if it didn't work she was going to have to put me to sleep. At the mention of being put to sleep I panicked. I did not want to be knocked out and started praying with all my might that the spinal would take and that Matt would be in the room with me when our daughter was born.

I was being wheeled into the OR and hoping that Matt would be joining me soon and that I would be awake to hear my baby's first cry. Luckily the spinal took and I was able to be awake for the surgery. Matt was brought in and they announced that they were starting the incision. I remember thinking... please don't let me feel it, please!! From the time of the first incision until Phoebe was out was only 8 minutes. I heard the doctor announce that the cord was wrapped around her neck twice. They held her up for half a second and we heard one cry and then nothing. I told Matt to go to her and later learned that they had put a tube down her throat in order to suction her lungs out. Before too long she started to cry and didn't stop the rest of the time we were in the OR. What a sweet, sweet sound it is to hear your baby's newborn cry.

As they were stitching me up I started to feel very nauseated and a bit out of sorts. I guess I said that a few times because Matt said they put something in my IV and I drifted off to sleep. I don't remember much after that until I was back in the recovery room. It all went so fast and was so scary. In the end I know that we were watched over that day and kept safe. I try not to dwell on the could have beens...if she had been head down it is very likely that I would have delivered her at home. Maybe even while Matt was walking Piper to school and I was home alone with Dax. Or maybe she would have decided to come while we were stuck in traffic on I-75. The scariest of scenarios would have been my water breaking with her in the transverse or breech position and have cord prolapse. Like I said, I try not to dwell on the could have beens and instead focus on the healthy baby we have home with us now.

I am still emotionally recovering from the shock of an emergency c section. Talk about as far from my planned birth as I could have gotten. We planned to deliver in the birthing tub surrounded by our midwife and with Piper there to witness the birth of her baby sister. I am so glad that we decided to send Piper to school that day and that she wasn't there to see everything unravel..including me. We always knew that Phoebe was going to be my last baby and that decision was solidified with the c section. My doctor told me that she stitched my uterus so that I could try for a VBAC in the future, but I don't think I will be needing that option.

In the end we had a healthy baby girl weighing 7 pounds and measuring 20 1/2 inches long. She was born with a head full of blonde hair and is identical to baby pictures of her big sister. She entered a family that waited a long time for her and that loves her totally and completely. When all that is true it doesn't really matter how she got here...only that she is here with us now. Safe and sound in our arms.

Baby Nora

October brought two sweet baby girls into our lives. On October 18th, our closest friends had their baby girl, Nora. She is so sweet and we feel so blessed to share this special time in with them as we raise our baby girls side by side. Nora and Phoebe are sure to be the best of friends like their big brothers, Finn and Dax. Matt was asked to take Nora's newborn pictures just a few days before Phoebe was born and it was so fun to be there with a sweet new baby knowing that we would soon have our own baby girl in our arms. Here are a few pictures from Nora's photo shoot.

A Whole Hand!

On October 17th Dax turned five! A whole hand!! We celebrated by going to see Where The Wild Things Are on his birthday. It was wonderful and we all loved it. We then headed home to have dinner with Nanna, Uncle Brian, Auntie Brittan and the cousins. Dax requested that Daddy make his alfredo sauce and it was so good! We love our sweet buggy boy and have cherished every moment of the 5 years he has been with us. He is the sweetest child I have ever known and I am not just saying that because he is mine. We are so proud to be his mommy and daddy and love having him in our family. Our sweet prince!

Maternity Pictures and Baby Shower

Matt took beautiful pictures of me about a month before Phoebe was born. I am so grateful to have these photos. I look at them and feel so beautiful knowing that my sweet girl is inside growing and preparing to join us. I am so thankful to be a mom and to have the ability to carry my children.

I had a wonderful baby shower thrown for me by my two wonderful friends, Amanda and Devon. It was so nice to be with family and friends to celebrate the impending arrival of Phoebe. It was a surreal pregnancy in so many ways after having been a surrogate mom twice. There were times that I would have to pinch myself when I realized that the baby kicking me was my baby. What a gift to be able to have a sweet baby to love after the gift of being a surrogate mom. I think all surrogates should have a baby of their own after they are surrogates.

My beautiful and delicious cake! This was before we decided to add Marie as a second middle name.

Piper was so excited to be there and part of the celebration. She could not wait to meet her baby sister!

It was so fun to share my pregnancy with Amanda. She had her sweet baby girl, Nora just 12 days before Phoebe was born. Here we are in all our pregnancy glory!

Back to Blogging

I really thought I would be able to overcome the black hole in the middle of my screen and continue to blog, but I couldn't. Not being able to see what I wrote without having to do acrobatics with the window screen made blogging a chore instead of fun. This is what my beloved MacBook looked like the day I sent it in for repairs.

Sad, hu?I wanted to share with everyone the wonderful happenings here at chez Mitchell. To tell you all about the sweet baby girl who was nestling into our hearts and about the incredible love her big brother and sister have for her. At this point it is near impossible to catch you all up on the last 4 months in words. I have always thought pictures do a better job anyway. So the plan is to post in pictures each month I missed out on sharing with the blogging world. At this point I am sure all of my readers have given up, but I want to be able to share this with my three (!) kids one day.

Goodbye

Matt was gone for a week this month. He was here...

He left us behind with a heavy heart and headed for West Virginia. Here is the trip in his words...

The first death in my family happened on February 7, 2010. My grandfather, Harry Mitchell, died at the age of 92. Leaving my grandmother all alone on the side of a mountain in West Virginia. I never really took the time to really get to know him, though I loved him and looked forward to seeing him. I won't make the same mistake with my Grandma. I am inspired by their dedication to each other for 60 years. The funeral was almost emotionless. Yet there was a peacefulness knowing he has moved on to a better place.

The snow fell softly throughout the week, a nice treat for this Florida boy. Grandma's house is the one constant in my lifetime. It's the one place that feels like home despite the porcelain bunnies everywhere. She seemed to keep it together for the most part, but sometimes I would find her crying aloud asking, "What am I going to do now?". I was never sure what to say, so a hug felt universal at those moments. The week was filled with probating, organizing, searching for titles, cooking, cleaning, watching Grandma cheer aloud for Apolo Ohno, shoveling snow, eating, a trip to the top of the mountain to see where Grandad and his parents lie and where Grandma will someday as well. Hopefully not too soon.

Announcing...

It's official! Phoebe Ann Marie Mitchell made her debut on October 30th and 12:38 pm. She weighed 7 pounds and measured 20 1/2 inches at birth. She kept us on our toes in the last few weeks before her arrival and decided an emergency c section was the best way to make her grand entrance. It was a scary turn of events, but both Mom and baby are healthy.

Phoebe is absolutely adored by her older sister and brother! Mom and Dad are pretty smitten as well. We are all so grateful to have her here with us and look forward to a new life as a family of five.

Here are a few pictures of our sweet baby girl.

Grandparents Breakfast

Piper's school has a special breakfast for students and grandparents. This was the third year in a row that Grandma and Grandad picked up Piper and had breakfast with her at school and then got to see her classroom and meet her teacher. She was so excited and looked forward to this day since the first day of school. Next year Grandma and Grandad will play double duty and have breakfast with both Piper and Dax!

Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder. Right?

I know, I know! I have been a bad blogger friend. I didn't intend for this to happen and I have missed all of you, but alas I have been a bad blogger friend. I have had many wonderful and exciting things to tell you about, sprinkled in with a few mundane things as well, just to keep it interesting. See the thing is my Macbook has suffered an injury. It is a fixable injury and purely cosmetic, but it is an injury nonetheless. It all started the night we transformed Piper's room from this...

to this...

We worked really hard to transform Piper's room into a room for Piper and Dax and we were quite pleased with the outcome. As the kids happily camped out in the family room we basked in the accomplishment of this new room. It was pretty late and we were pretty tired so what happens next has been forgiven. I set my Macbook on the step stool and left the room to get something. I hadn't been gone long when I heard a crash and Matt yell. I ran back to the room thinking he had fallen somehow and asked if he was okay. He answered that he was fine, but my computer might be broken. WHAT?! The proper response would have been relief and joy that my husband was okay, but I admit that it was fear for my beloved laptop that was the overwhelming thought in my head. See when Matt went to move the step stool he didn't see my computer sitting on the top step and it slid right off and hit the floor. Hard. What has resulted is a cracked screen that has gotten worse as time has gone by. It can be fixed and will be fixed, but right now we are using our money to pay for things like electricity and rent with not a whole lot left over.

So you see, it has been difficult to blog with a screen that is blocked by black fingers of pixel killing death. But so many fun things have happened and I want them to be here at chez mitchell blogspot. So I plan to blog like crazy and catch you all up on the stuff that has been going on here. As you can see we have done some remodeling and still have a bit more to do as well. So check back often in the next day or so for new posts of things that have already happened and maybe even a current event as well.

First Day of School

I can't believe that both of my babies are at school right now. We all woke up bright and early ready for the exciting day ahead. Piper had a hard night and came running in our room at 10:15 convinced that it was time to get ready for school. She was crying and complaining of an upset tummy. I figured it was night before school nerves and we put her back to bed with a throw up bucket just in case.

The alarm went off bright and early at 6:45 and Phoebe must have heard it because she woke up kicking and stretching. HA! Piper bounded into our room with the tummy nerves. I went to wake Dax up and do morning stretches with him. He was in a chipper mood and I was happy about that since he is NOT a morning person. Hmm...wonder who he gets that from?!

I made smoothies for breakfast and then we got into new school outfits and got all spiffed up for pictures in front of the tree. Here are a few favorites.

Here is Piper's first day of 1st grade as compared to today. She has grown up and changed so much!!

First Grade

Second Grade

She was excited to start school and barely let me take a picture with her teacher. Times are changing and my baby is growing up.

Maddax started PRE-K this morning and this is the first time he has ever left me. He was nervous and quiet this morning as we waited to take him into his school. We took a few more pictures and then walked him in. He walked right up to his teacher and said hello. I snapped my picture of him and his teacher, got him settled into his seat and took one more picture before walking out the door. The director was standing outside his room and commented on how well he was doing. I said that he was fine and I was a mess. HA! I had tears streaming down my face by the time we reached the van, but when we left he was tear free and that made me happy.

Here is my big boy!
